Lately I am so bored because there aren't that many good games coming recently. So I decided to browse at steam's top sellers and came across this game called Game Dev Tycoon. "I always wanted to make games so why not!" I said to myself and played the game.
At first, you start off as a man/woman developing games at their garage. (As many indie developers did.) You go back in time, where the first games were released. You make small games at first until you make enough money to move into an actual office. As a gamer your game experiences comes into play here. At first you decide the theme and genre. "Which theme and genre is a good combination? I'll develop an airplane simulation game." Then you decide which areas to focus on. "Hmm.. An airplane simulation game doesn't need a good story at all, so scratch that. I'll focus on the gameplay." After you're done deciding you create the game and it gets reviewed. As you can see, your knowledge of game making helps you a lot, especially at the beginning.
Of course, it doesn't end there. You need to research new technology and build your own game engines to compete with other developers. If you are an old school gamer you'll feel the nostalgia as you research mono sound and upgrade from text based graphics to 2d graphics v1.
After you've earned over 1M cash (Too bad you can't make goat games!) you can move to an actual office and recruit people. You continue researching and researching and new consoles come out. (I've never lost faith in you, PC!) It is difficult to get started at making medium games so you'll make many mediocre games until you recruit more people and train them. I don't want to give too much spoilers but you will become such a big company that you'll even make your own console! I spent around 20 hours in the game and I enjoyed it a lot. Feel free to share your game development stories with me!
